SAME TALE FOR WALTON RETURN
Monday, 16 August 2010

Round five of the Australian Saloon Car Series is shaping up to be a repeat of last year’s event at Morgan Park after Queensland Kris Walton won race one at the Warwick circuit here today.

After winning the abbreviated first round at Bathurst in February this year, he declared that he would not be pursuing the series fulltime, opting to just take in the local round only after the New South Wales foray.
It was similar to his series scenario in 2009 and a comparable result for the Talbrace Ford Falcon AU driver could occur this time around.

Walton trailed defending champion Shawn Jamieson in his Morphet Vale Garages Holden Commodore VT in the early part of the opening ten lap race before gaining a tentative chance to show the way.

Jamieson fought back to regain the lead briefly before Walton again forged to the front. The fight then went out of the race when Jamieson broke the gear lever and was force out of the race.

Behind the duo there was a grand stoush between series leader Victorian Tim Rowse in the Rowse Motors Commodore, former front runner and fellow Garden State resident Simon Tabinor in his Eurostar Diesel VY and South African born now Queensland Grant Gatland in his Falcon. Ultimately Gatland won through whilst the British born Tabinor wound up fourth.

An upgrade to a AU Falcon from the previous specification EA model benefitted Lindsay Kearns for a fine fifth after a race long struggle against fellow Ford runners Nathan Garioch, David Rogers and John Van Gilst.

Peter Dane was also in that battle before a slip up on the final lap relegated him to tenth behind the series veteran Geoff Brown who improved nine places from qualifying 18th.

KINGSLEY'S STREAK GOES TO NINE WITH WARWICK WIN Print E-mail
Monday, 16 August 2010 07:51

THE FIRST ROUND of the 2010 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia Series presented by Mission Foods did not end well for Matt Kingsley.

The defending champion ended the race at Bathurst in February this year with a bent car and zero points, after a substantial start-line crash with Sven Burchartz.

Four rounds later, things are very different after the Gold Coaster took his Action Tyres and More 996 GT3 Cup Car to its third consecutive round – and ninth consecutive race – win at Morgan Park Raceway in Queensland.

Kingsley was at his dominant best at the weekend as he took pole position and won each of the three races, with Roger Lago finishing second overall and winning the 997 class.

Sven Burchartz consistent results secured him third overall, with Jeff Bobik fourth and Kingsley’s team mate Terry Knight 5th in a career best round result.

The results at his home track ensured Kingsley went one better than last year – where he ‘only’ won two of the three races – and extended his already substantial points lead with two rounds remaining.

“To win nine races in a row is just a dream,” Kingsley said.

“The car has been fantastic all weekend long and it’s very satisfying to be able to put these kind of results together like we have been lately.

“In a way we were lucky that the final race was shortened (to twelve laps, due to a track surface issue) because we were having a brake issue in the left hand front calliper. The brakes were overheating and I think Roger may have caught us.

“Eastern Creek is going to be a challenge,” he added.

“Shaun Juniper was fantastic there last year in his 997 and that track suits the newer cars. It’s going to be a great fight and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Jeff Bobik and Jon Trende will be two drivers returning to Victoria perhaps thinking Morgan Park was a case of ‘what could have been’.

Bobik spent Sunday charging through the field after enduring a spin in Saturday’s first race. Starting ninth, Bobik raced to fourth in race two before engaging in a mighty battle with Sven Burchartz in the finale’, eventually passing the former champion for the final podium position with three laps to go.

Trende was electrifying on Sunday and raced his way to contention for a possible podium in the finale, but was later penalised 30 seconds for contact with another competitor in a mid-race incident.

With Trende sixth for the round, South Australian John Goodacre finished seventh thanks partly to a career best sixth place in race two – but not after a 12-lap long stoush with Terry Knight in a battle of the 996s.

In another bonus to add to an already good weekend, Goodacre won the Xtreme industries Best Presented award for his immaculately presented green, black and white 996 GT3 Cup Car.

Brad Rankin was ninth, and was having a good weekend until being turned around and beached in turn two after contact with Jon Trende as the pair fought over position.

Tony Quinn was ninth despite withdrawing from the final race, whilst quiet achiever Paul Bolinowsky finished 10th.

Sydney driver Anthony Skinner returned to the series at the weekend and secured Class A honours, whilst Indiran Padayachee won class D.

GT3 Cup Challenge Australia Series Presented by Mission Foods category administrator Jodi Zylstra said that the series’ return to Morgan Park was worth the wait.

“We have had a great weekend, congratulations to everyone involved in the meeting for making it such a good one for our competitors,” Zylstra said.

“The new track received almost universal praise from our competitors and everything from the organisation in general to the fantastic service – and prices – in the canteens were commented on. We can’t wait to return with an even bigger field in 2011.”

Then next round of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia Series Presented by Mission Foods will be contested at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway on September 11-12, with the Shannons Nationals.

Action from this weekends’ round can be seen on SBS Speedweek this Sunday afternoon from the new time of 12:30PM.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE RULES ON SATURDAY AT MORGAN PARK

Saturday, 14 August 2010

Local Knowledge has proven to be a big commodity at Morgan Park Raceway in Queensland as local drivers filled four of the first six places in today’s opening Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia Series presented by Mission Foods race.

Southport (Gold Coast) ace Matt Kinglsey continued his winning ways after starting from pole and winning the 12-lap race easily, whilst Roger Lago finished second. Victorian Jon Trende was third, ahead of another local in VIP Petfoods driver Tony Quinn. Sven Burchartz finished fifth.

Lago got the best start and led the first lap, only for Kingsley to slice his 996 GT3 Cup Car up the inside at turn one to a lead he would never lose.

Lago then slipped into the clutches of a fast-starting Jeff Bobik, who diced with the second-placed man for several laps before spinning his car at turn seven, eventually recovering to finish ninth.

Kingsley also set the fastest lap and the new class lap record, at 1m18.1039s.

Second-placed man Lago said he didn’t have quite enough pace to challenge Kingsley for the win.

“It’s the same as last year, Matt had the pace and although I got the start I could only hold him up for a lap or two before he came past,” he said.

“The car was good though Jeff Bobik was putting a lot of pressure on me. It was a really good battle before he spun.”

Bobik said he was just too close to the rear of Lago’s 997 GT3 Cup Car and had to choose between making contact or spinning his car off. Though the end result was disapointing, his pace was impressive given he had a clutch issue in qualifying that restricted him to just two hot laps.

“I think Roger braked a little bit early to get a good run down the fast bit of the track so he could cover me,” Bobik explained.

“I was either going to run into the back of him in the braking zone or spin, because I was really close and putting the pressure on. I broke hard and the back just came round and I ended up pointing the wrong way.

“I had the race pace and set the second fastest lap, only a hundredth off Kingsley, so the car is quick. We’ll come through tomorrow – it was a good race.”

The battles for position in the bottom half of the top ten were equally intense, Brad Rankin, Yuey Tan and Terry Knight fighting for sixth, seventh and eighth.

In just his second round and fourth ever race in a Porsche since making the step from Saloon Cars, John Goodacre finished inside the top ten and third in the 996 class.

BACK-TO-BACK BEN SHOOTS TO SERIES LEAD
Sunday, 15 August 2010

BRITISH DRIVER Ben Barker took a couple of rounds to get into the swing of driving a Formula 3 wings and slicks racer, but lately things sure have clicked.

The Team BRM driver has today rocketed to the top of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ Championship standings after winning an action-packed feature race today at Morgan Park Raceway.

In the midst of a season that gets more and more competitive, Barker is the third different feature race winner from five rounds this year - with the top three drivers now separated by just four points with two rounds to go.

Barker won the first heat race yesterday (Saturday), finished second to Tom Tweedie in the second and led all the way from pole in the feature, though under intense pressure from Mitch Evans all the way.

Barker noted after his storming win that the title race was well and truly alive.

“It’s on from here,” he said.

“It took me a few rounds to get up to speed driving a Formula 3 Car, but since Mallala it’s been brilliant. The car is great and I’m feeling comfortable. It’s all gelling really well.

“It’s been great to keep the ball rolling from Mallala but the battle really begins here. At Eastern Creek it’s really going to be ‘on’”.

Barker said the pressure was mounting, with both team-mate Evans and Tweedie proving this weekend that it’s a three-horse race for the Gold Star.

“Obviously leading the championship has been the aim all along but now the pressure only gets more intense, just as it was today when Mitch was chasing me down,” He said.

“That pressure will only get more and more intense so managing that will be a big part of the last two rounds. I can’t wait.”

Mitch Evans’ second place was the culmination of a storming comeback after a disappointing black-flag for rolling at the start yesterday.

Starting today’s sprint race in fifth, Evans finished third before moving to second in the feature.

“It’s been a good comeback from yesterday. We don’t want to finish second but after starting the sprint race in fifth it’s not a bad result,” Evans said.

“I was catching Ben (during the feature) and the car came on later in the race but I couldn’t get close enough to try a pass.”

Evans – who leaves Morgan Park holding the outright lap record (1:09.4745) was able to take advantage of some misfortune from Tom Tweedie after the former point’s leader’s Team Tom Dallara failed to fire at the beginning of the formation lap.

The Sydneysider was forced to start from the rear of the field, resulting in an action packed charge through the pack.

At 220km/hr Tweedie and Team BRM with PTRS driver Zhang Shan Qi fought a side-by side battle through the fastest section of the new Morgan Park circuit, banging wheels and rubbing bodywork in an aggressive fight.

The aggressive racing and subsequent contact between the pair will be investigated by series stewards at Eastern Creek next month.

Tweedie then set out after Gilmour and the pair ran side by side for three turns, before Tweedie had a half-spin whilst trying to take the inside line into turn six,

Gilmour’s third place was his second podium of the weekend and his best F3 overall result since 2006, whilst Zhang elevated himself to fourth in the standings heading into the final two rounds.

Behind all the drama and excitement, Josh Hunt finished a quiet sixth, whilst Ben Gersekowski rebounded from a crash yesterday – and a non-start in the second sprint today – to finish seventh and set competitive times in the process.

The weekend long battle between Toowoomba’s Jimmy Mann and Roman Krumins was decided in the favour of Mann, who took his Jon Mills-owned F301 to eighth today.

The Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ championship for the CAMS Gold Star will go down to the wire, with the penultimate round to be held at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway on September 11-12.
